  GlindaTheGoodWitchGrantsDorothys

  WishBeforetheywenttoseeGlinda,however,theyweretakentoaroomoftheCastle,whereDorothywashedherfadbedherhair,andtheLionshookthedustoutofhismane,andtheScarecrowpattedhimselfintohisbestshape,andtheWoodmanpolishedhistinandoiledhisjoints.

  Whentheywereallquitepresentabletheyfollowedthesol-diergirlintoabigroomwheretheWitchGlindasatuponathroneofrubies.

  Shewasbothbeautifulandyoungtotheireyes.Herhairwasarichredincolorandfellinflowingrisoverhershoulders.Herdressurewhitebuthereyeswereblue,andtheylookedkindlyupolegirl.

  "WhatIdoforyou,mychild?"sheasked.

  DorothytoldtheWitchallherstory:howthecyehadbroughthertotheLandofOz,howshehadfoundher-panions,andofthewonderfuladveheyhadmetwith.

  "Mygreatestwishnow,"sheadded,"istogetbacktoKansas,forAuntEmwillsurelythinksomethingdreadfulhashappeome,andthatwillmakeherputonm;anduhecropsarebetterthisyearthantheywerelast,IamsureUncleHenryotaffordit.”

  Glindaleanedforwardandkissedthesweet,upturnedfaceofthelovinglittlegirl.

  "Blessyourdearheart,"shesaid,"IamsureItellyouofawaytogetbacktoKansas."Thensheadded,"But,ifIdo,youmustgivemetheGoldenCap.”

  "Willingly!"exclaimedDorothy;"iisofomenow,andwhenyouhaveityouandtheWingedMohreetimes.”

  "AndIthinkIshallheirservicejustthosethreetimes,"answeredGlinda,smiling.

  DorothytheheGoldenCap,achsaidtotheScarecrow,"WhatwillyoudowhenDorothyhasleftus?”

  "IwillreturntotheEmeraldCity,"hereplied,"forOzhasmademeitsrulerandthepeoplelikeme.TheonlythingthatworriesmeishowtocrossthehilloftheHammer-Heads.”

  "BymeansoftheGoldenCapIshallandtheWingedMoocarryyoutothegatesoftheEmeraldCity,"saidGlinda,"foritwouldbeashametodeprivethepeopleofsowonderfularuler.”

  "AmIreallywonderful?"askedtheScarecrow.

  "Youareunusual,"repliedGlinda.

  TurningtotheTinWoodman,sheasked,"Whatwillbe-eofyouwhenDorothyleavesthistry?”

  Heleanedonhisaxeandthoughtamoment.Thenhesaid,"TheWinkieswereverykindtome,andwaoruleoverthemaftertheWickedWitchdied.IamfondoftheWinkies,andifIcouldgetbackagaintothetryoftheWest,Ishouldlikenothierthantoruleoverthemfor-ever.”

  "MysedandtotheWingedMonkeys,"saidGlinda"willbethattheycarryyousafelytothelandoftheWinkies.YourbrainmaynotbesetolookatasthoseoftheScarecrow,butyouarereallybrighterthanheis?awhenyouarewellpolished?aandIamsureyouwillruletheWinkieswiselyandwell.”

  Thechlookedatthebig,shaggyLionandasked,"WhenDorothyhasreturoherownhome,whatwillbe-eofyou?”

  "OverthehilloftheHammer-Heads,"heanswered,"liesagrandoldforest,andallthebeaststhatlivetherehavemademetheirKing.IfIcouldobacktothisforest,Iwouldpassmylifeveryhappilythere.”

  "MythirdandtotheWingedMonkeys,"saidGlinda,"shallbetocarryyoutoyourforest.Then,havihepowersoftheGoldenCap,IshallgiveittotheKingoftheMohatheandhisbandmaythereafterbefreeforever-more.”

  TheScarecrowainWoodmanandtheLionnowthaheGoodWitchearlyforherkindness;andDorothyexclaimed:

  "Youarecertainlyasgoodasyouarebeautiful!ButyouhaveoldmehowtogetbacktoKansas.”

  "YourSilverShoeswillcarryyouoverthedesert,"repliedGlinda."IfyouhadknowntheirpoweryoucouldhavegonebacktoyourAuheveryfirstdayyoucametothistry.”

  "ButthenIshouldnothavehadmywonderfulbrains!”

  criedtheScarecrow."Imighthavepassedmywholelifeinthefarmersfield.”

  "AndIshouldnothavehadmylovelyheart,"saidtheTinWoodman."Imighthavestoodandrustedintheforesttilltheendoftheworld.”

  "AndIshouldhavelivedacowardforever,"declaredtheLion,"andinalltheforestwouldhavehadagoodwordtosaytome.”

  "Thisisalltrue,"saidDorothy,"andIamgladIwasofusetothesegoodfriends.Butnowthateachofthemhashadwhathemostdesired,andeachishappyinhavingakingdomtorulebesides,IthinkIshouldliketogobacktoKansas.”

  "TheSilverShoes,"saidtheGoodWitch,"havewonderfulpowers.Ahemostcuriousthingsaboutthemisthattheycarryyoutoanyplatheworldieps,andeachstepwillbemadeinthewinkofaneye.Allyouhavetodoistoknocktheheelstogetherthreetimesandandtheshoestocarryyouwhereveryouwishtogo.”

  "Ifthatisso,"saidthechildjoyfully,"IwillaskthemtocarrymebacktoKansasatonce.”

  ShethrewherarmsaroundtheLionsnedkissedhim,pattinghisbigheadtenderly.ThenshekissedtheTinWood-man,eepinginawaymostdangeroustohisjoints.

  Butshehuggedthesoft,stuffedbodyoftheScarecrowinherarmsinsteadofkissinghispaintedfadfoundshewasgherselfatthissorrowfulpartingfromherloving-rades.

  GlindatheGoodsteppeddownfromherrubythroogivethelittlegirlagood-byekiss,andDorothythankedherforallthekindnessshehadshowntoherfriendsandherself.

  DorothynowtookTotoupsolemnlyinherarms,andhav-ingsaidogood-byesheclappedtheheelsofhershoestogetherthreetimes,saying:

  "TakemehometoAuntEm!”

  *****Instantlyshewaswhirlingthroughtheair,soswiftlythatallshecouldseeorfeelwasthewindwhistlingpastherears.

  TheSilverShoestookbutthreesteps,andtheoppedsosuddenlythatsherolledoveruponthegrassseveraltimesbeforesheknewwhereshewas.

  Atlength,however,shesatupandlookedabouther.

  "Goodgracious!"shecried.

  ForshewassittingonthebroadKansasprairie,andjustbe-foreherwasthenewfarmhouseUncleHenrybuiltafterthecyehadcarriedawaytheoldone.UncleHenrywasmilk-ingthecowsinthebarnyard,andTotohadjumpedoutofherarmsandwasrunningtowardthebarn,barkingfuriously.

  Dorothystoodupandfoundshewasiog-feet.

  FortheSilverShoeshadfallenoffinherflightthroughtheair,andwerelostforeverinthedesert.
