Theyurgedthehorsestoaterandthunderedalongtheduskyroadiyle.Butalmostatobegangoingdownhill.TheywouldhavethoughtGolghadsehewrongwayiftheyhadnotseen,ohersideofthevalley,thelampsgoingonandupwardsasfarastheeyecouldreach.Butatthebottomofthevalleythelampsshoneonmovingwater.
"Haste,"criedthePriheygallopeddowntheslope.Itwouldhavebeennastyenoughatthebottomevenfivemierforthetidewasrunningupthevalleylikeamill-radifithadetoswimming,thehorsescouldhardlyhavewonover.Butitwasstillonlyafootortwodeep,andthoughitswishedterriblyroundthehorseslegs,theyreachedthefarsideiy.
Theheslow,wearymarchuphillwithnothiolookatbutthepalelampswhitupandupasfarastheeyecouldreach.Whentheylookedbacktheycouldseethewaterspreading.AllthehillsofUnderlandwerenowislands,anditwasonlyonthoseislandsthatthelampsremained.Everymomentsomedistantlightvanished.Soontherewouldbetotaldarknesseverywhereexceptontheroadtheywerefollowing;ahelowerpartofitbehihoughnolampshadyetgo,thelamplightshoneonwater.
Althoughtheyhadgoodreasonforhurrying,thehorsescouldnotgoonforeverwithoutarest.Theyhalted:andiheycouldhearthelappingofwater.

DuringthehourorsothatfollowedJillsometimesthoughtthatPuddleglumwasrightaboutthelamps,andsometimesthoughtitwasonlyherimagination.Meanwhilethelandwasging.TheroofofUnderlandwassohatevenbythatdulllighttheycouldquitedistinctly.Andthegreat,ruggedwallsofUnderlandcouldbeseendrawingcloseroneachside.Theroad,infact,wasleadingthemupintoasteeptunnel.
Theybegantopasspidshovelsandbarrowsandnsthatthediggershadretlybeenatwork.Ifonlyonecouldbesureofgettingout,allthiswasverycheering.
