TheHEgrasswasdryandwithered,andtheustbetakenoutofthewoodsainthebarntobefed.Allthebright-coloredleavesbecamedullbrowhecoldfallrainsbegan.
Therewasnomoreplayinguhetrees.ButPawasinthehousewhenitrained,andhebeganagaintoplaythefiddleaftersupper.
Thentherainsstopped.Theweathergrewcolder.Intheearlymseverythingsparkledwithfrost.Thedaysweregrowingshortandalittlefireburnedalldayinthecookstovetokeepthehousewarm.Winterwasnotfaraway.
Theattidthecellarwerefullofgoodthingsoncemore,andLauraandMaryhadstartedtomakepatchworkquilts.Everythingwasbeginningtobesnugandcosyagain.
OnenightwhenhecameinfromdoingthechoresPasaidthataftersupperhewouldgotohisdeer-lidwatchforadeer.Therehadbeennofreshmeatilehousesincespring,butnowthefawnsweregrownup,andPawouldgohuntingagain.
