  WithoutdoubtIwouldhavepaidagreaterpenaltylater,andverylikelymycareerwouldhavebeeurelyterminated,hadnotprovidenceequiptmewithasafetydevice,whichhasseemedtoimprovewithadvangyearsandunfailinglyesintoplaywhenmyforcesareatanend.SolongasitoperatesIamsafefromdanger,duetooverwork,whichthreatensotheriorsand,ially,Ineednovacationswhichareindispensabletomostpeople.WhenIamallbutusedupIsimplydoasthedarkies,who"naturallyfallasleepwhilewhitefolksworry".Toveheoryoutofmysphere,thebodyprobablyaccumulateslittlebylittleadefinitequantityofsometoxitandIsinkintoanearlylethargicstatewhichlastshalfanhourtotheminute.UponawakeningIhavethesensationasthoughtheeventsimmediatelypreghadoccurredverylongago,andifIattempttotiheinterruptedtrainofthoughtIfeelaveritablementalnausea.InvoluntarilyIthenturntootherworkandamsurprisedatthefreshnessofthemindandeasewithwhichIovereobstaclesthathadbaffledmebefore.AfterweeksormonthsmypassionforthetemporarilyabandonediiournsandIinvariablyfindaoallthevexiionswithscarcelyanyeffort.InthiseIwilltellofaraordinaryexperiencewhichmaybeofiostudentsofpsychology.

  Ihadproducedastrikingphenomenonwithmygrouransmitterandwasendeavtoascertainitstruesignifirelationtothecurrentspropagatedthroughtheearth.Itseemedahopelessuaking,andformorethanayearIworkeduingly,butinvain.ThisprofoundstudysoentirelyabsorbedmethatIbecamefetfulofeverythingelse,evenofmyundermih.Atlast,asIwasatthepointofbreakingdown,natureappliedthepreservativeinduglethalsleep.RegainingmysensesIrealizedwithsternationthatIwasuovisualizesesfrommylifeexceptthoseofinfancy,theveryfirstohathadenteredmysciousness.Curiouslyenough,theseappearedbeforemyvisionwithstartlingdistinessandaffordedmewelerelief.Nightafternight,wheiring,Iwouldthinkofthemandmoreandmoreofmypreviousexistencewasrevealed.Theimageofmymotherwasalwaystheprincipalfigureinthespectaclethatslowlyunfolded,andaingdesiretoseeheragaingraduallytookpossessiohisfeelinggrewsthatIresolvedtodropallworkandsatisfymylonging.ButIfoundittoohardtobreakawayfromthelaboratory,andseveralmonthselapsedduringwhichIhadsucceededinrevivingalltheimpressionsofmypastlifeuptothespringof1892.Ipicturethatcameoutofthemistofoblivion,IsawmyselfattheHoteldelaPaixinParisjustingtofromoneofmypeculiarsleepingspells,whichhadbeencausedbyproloionofthebrain.ImagihepainanddistressIfeltwhenitflasheduponmymindthatadispatchwashaomeatthatverymomentbearingthesadhatmymotherwasdying.IrememberedhowImadethelongjourneyhomewithoutanhourofrestandhowshepassedawayafterweeksofagony!IteciallyremarkablethatduringallthisperiodofpartiallyobliteratedmemoryIwasfullyalivetoeverythingtougonthesubjeyresearch.Icouldrecallthesmallestdetailsandtheleastsignifitobservationsinmyexperimentsandeveepagesoftextandplexmathematiulae.

  Mybeliefisfirminalawofpensatioruerewardsareeverinproportiontothelaborandsacrificesmade.ThisisohereasonswhyIfeelcertainthatofallmyiions,theMagnifyingTransmitterwillprovemostimportantandvaluabletofuturegeions.Iampromptedtothispredinotsomuchbythoughtsoftheercialandindustrialrevolutionwhichitwillsurelybringabout,butofthehumanitariansequehemanyachievementsitmakespossible.siderationsofmereutilityweighlittleinthebalanceagainstthehigherbesofcivilization.Wearefrohportentousproblemswhinotbesolvedjustbyprovidingforourmaterialexistence,howeverabundantly.Orary,progressinthisdireisfraughtwithhazardsandperilsnotlessmenagthanthosebornfromwantandsuffering.Ifweweretoreleasetheenergyofatomsordiscoversomeotherwayofdevelopingcheapandunlimitedpoweratanypointoftheglobethisaplishment,insteadofbeingablessing,mightbringdisastertomankindingivingrisetodissensionandanarchywhichwouldultimatelyresultihroofthehatedregimeofforce.Thegreatestgoodwillesfromteicalimprovementstendingtounificationandharmony,andmywirelesstransmitterispreemilysuch.Byitsmeansthehumanvoidlikenesswillbereproducedeverywhereandfactoriesdriventhousandsofmilesfromwaterfallsfurnishingthepower;aerialmaeswillbepropelledarouhwithoutastopandthesun'senergytrolledtocreatelakesandriversformotivepurposesandtransformationofariddesertsiileland.Itsintrodufortelegraphic,telephonidsimilaruseswillautomaticallycutoutthestatidallotherinterferenceswhichatpresentimposenarrowlimitstotheapplicationofthewireless.

  Thisisatimelytopiwhichafewwordsmightnotbeamiss.Duridecadeanumberofpeoplehavearrogantlyclaimedthattheyhadsucceededindoingawaywiththisimpediment.Ihavecarefullyexaminedallofthearrasdescribedaedmostofthemlongbeforetheywerepubliclydisclosed,butthefindingwasuniformlyive.AretofficialstatementfromtheU.S.Navymay,perhaps,havetaughtsomebeguilableorshoraisetheseannousattheirrealworth.AsaruletheattemptsarebasedontheoriessofallaciousthatwheheyetomynoticeIothelpthinkinginalightervein.Quiteretlyanewdiscoverywasheralded,withadeafeningflourishoftrumpets,butitprovedanotherountainbringingforthamouse.

  ThisremindsmeofaingiwhichtookplaceyearsagowhenIwasdugmyexperimentswithcurrentsofhighfrequency.SteveBrodiehadjustjumpedofftheBrooklynBridge.Thefeathasbeenvulgarizedsincebyimitators,butthefirstreportelectrifiedNewYork.?Iwasveryimpressiohenandfrequentlyspokeofthedaringprinter.OnahotafternooheyofrefreshingmyselfandsteppedintoohepopularthirtythousandinstitutionsofthisgreatcitywhereadelicioustwelvepertbeveragewasservedwhinowbehadonlybymakingatriptothepooraatedtriesofEurope.Theattendancewaslargeandnotoverdistinguishedandamatterwasdiscussedwhichgavemeanadmirableopeningforthecarelessremark:"ThisiswhatIsaidwhenIjumpedoffthebridge."NosoonerhadIutteredthesewordsthalikethepanionofTimotheusinthepoemofSchiller.Inaninstantthereandemoniumandadozenvoicescried:"ItisBrodie!"Ithrewaquarterontheterandboltedforthedoorbutthecrowdwasatmyheelswithyells:"Stop,Steve!"whichmusthavebeenmisuoodformanypersonstriedtoholdmeupasIranfranticallyformyhavene.BydartingaroundersIfortunatelymahroughthemediumofafire-escape-toreachthelaboratorywhereIthrewoffmycoat,camouflagedmyselfasahard-wblacksmith,andstartedthefe.Buttheseprecautionsprovedunnecessary;Ihadeludedmypursuers.Formanyyearsafterward,atnight,whenimaginationturnsintospectresthetriflingtroublesoftheday,Ioftenthought,asItossedonthebed,whatmyfatewouldhavebeenhadthatmobcaughtmeandfoundoutthatIwasnotSteveBrodie!

  Nowtheengineer,wholatelygaveanatbeforeateicalbodyofanovelremedyagainststaticsbasedooforeunknownlawofnature,"seemstohavebeenasrecklessasmyselfwheehatthesedisturbancespropagateupanddown,whilethoseofatransmitterproceedaloh.Itwouldmeanthatadenser,asthisglobe,withitsgaseousenvelope,couldbechargedanddischargedinamannerquitetrarytothefualteagspropoundedineveryelementaltext-bookofphysics.Suchasuppositionwouldhavebeennedaserroneous,eveninFranklin'stime,forthefactsbearingonthiswerethenwellknownandtheidentitybetweenatmosphericelectricityandthatdevelopedbymaeswasfullyestablished.Obviously,naturalandartificialdisturbancespropagatethroughtheearthandtheairilythesameway,andbothsetupeleotiveforthehorizontal,aswellasvertical,seerferennotbeoverebyanysuchmethodsaswereproposed.Thetruthisthis:ihepotentialincreasesattherateofaboutfiftyvoltsperfootofelevation,owingtowhichtheremaybeadifferenceofpressureamountingtotwenty,orevenfortythousandvoltsbetweentheupperandlowerendsoftheantenna.Themassesofthechargedatmospherearestantlyinmotionandgiveupelectricitytotheductor,nottinuouslybutratherdisruptively,thisprodugagrindingnoiseiivetelephonicreceiver.Thehighertheterminalandthegreaterthespapassedbythewires,themorepronouheeffect,butitmustbeuoodthatitispurelylodhaslittletodowiththerealtrouble.

  In1900,whileperfegmywirelesssystem,oneformofapparatusprisedfourantehesewerecarefullycalibratedtothesamefrequendectedinmultiplewiththeobjeagnifyiion,inreceivingfromanydire.WhenIdesiredtoascertaintheinofthetransmittedimpulses,eachdiagonallysituatedpairutinseriesrimarycoilenergiziectorcircuit.Intheformercasethesoundwasloudielephohelatteritceased,asexpected,thetwoanteralizingeachother,butthetruestatiifestedthemselvesinbothinstandIhadtodevisespecialpreventivesembodyingdifferentprinciples.

  Byemployingreceiversectedtotwopointsoftheground,assuggestedbymelongago,thistroublecausedbythechargedair,whichisveryseriousiructuresasnowbuilt,isnullifiedandbesides,theliabilityofallkindsofinterferenceisreducedtoaboutone-half,becauseofthedirealcharacterofthecircuit.Thiserfectlyself-evident,butcameasarevelationtosomesimple-mindedwirelessfolkswhoseexperiencewasfioformsofapparatusthatcouldhavebeenimprovedwithanaxe,andtheyhavebeendisposingofthebear'sskinbeforekillingit.Ifitweretruethatstraysperformedsutics,itwouldbeeasytogetridofthembyreceivingwithoutaerials.But,asamatteroffact,awireburiedinthegroundwhich,ingtothisview,shouldbeabsolutelyimmune,ismoresusceptibletocertairaneousimpulsesthanoneplacedverticallyintheair.Tostateitfairly,aslightprogresshasbeenotbyvirtueofanyparticularmethodordevice.Itwasachievedsimplybydiscardingtheenormousstructures,whicharebadenoughfortransmissionbutwhollyunsuitableforreception,andadoptingamoreappropriatetypeofreceiver.AsIpoiinapreviousarticle,todisposeofthisdifficultyfood,aradicalgemustbemadeiem,andthesoohisisdoer.

  Itwouldbecalamitous,indeed,ifatthistimewheisinitsinfandthevastmajority,notexceptingeves,havenoceptionofitsultimatepossibilities,ameasurewouldberushedthroughthelegislaturemakingitagovermonopoly.ThisroposedafewweeksagobySecretaryDaniels,andnodoubtthatdistinguishedofficialhasmadehisappealtotheSenateandHouseofRepresentativeswithsincerevi.Butuniversalevidenmistakablyshowsthatthebestresultsarealwaysobtainedihfulercialpetition.Thereare,however,exceptionalreasonswhywirelessshouldbegiventhefullestfreedomofdevelopment.Inthefirstplaceitoffersprospectsimmeasurablygreaterandmorevitaltobettermentofhumahananyotheriionordiscoveryioryofman.Thenagain,itmustbeuoodthatthiswonderfularthasbeen,iirety,evolvedhereandbecalled"Ameri"withmhtandproprietythaelephoheindestlamportheaeroplane.

  EnterprisingpressagentsandstockjobbershavebeensosuccessfulinspreadingmisinformationthatevensoexcellentaperiodicalastheStificAmeriaccordsthechiefcredittntry.TheGermans,ofcaveustheHertz-wavesandtheRussian,English,FrendItaliaswerequiusingthemfnalingpurposes.Itwasanobviousapplicationofthenewagentandaplishedwiththeoldclassidunimprovedinducoil-scarcelyanythingmorethananotherkindofheliography.Theradiusoftransmissionwasverylimited,theresultsattainedoflittlevalue,azoscillations,asameansforveyingintelligence,couldhavebeenadvantageouslyreplacedbysound-waves,whichIadvocatedin1891.Moreover,alloftheseattemptsweremadethreeyearsafterthebasiciplesofthewirelesssystem,whichisuniversallyemployedto-day,anditspotentinstrumentalitieshadbeenclearlydescribedanddevelopedinAmeriotraceofthoseHertzianappliandmethodsremainstoday.roceededintheveryoppositedireandwhathasbeeheproductofthebrainsandeffortsofcitizensofthistry.Thefualpatentshaveexpiredandtheopportunitiesareopentoall.ThechiefargumentoftheSecretaryisbasedoninterference.AcctohisstatemeedintheNewYorkHeraldofJuly29th,signalsfromapowerfulstationbeinterceptedineveryvillageoftheworld.Ihisfact,whichwasdemonstratedinmyexperimentsof1900,itwouldbeoflittleusetoimposerestrisiedStates.

  Asthrowinglightonthispoint,Imaymentionthatolyanoddlookilemancalledohtheobjectofenlistingmyservithestruofworldtransmittersiantland."Wehavenomoney,"hesaid,"butcarloadsofsolidgoldandwewillgiveyoualiberalamount."ItoldhimthatIwaoseefirstwhatwillbedohmyiionsinAmeridthiseheinterview.ButIamsatisfiedthatsomedarkforcesareatwork,andastimegoesonthemaintenanceoftinuousunicationwillberenderedmoredifficult.?Theonlyremedyisasystemimmuneagainstinterruption.Ithasbeenperfected,itexists,andallthatisnecessaryistoputitiion.

  TheterribleflictisstilluppermostinthemindsandperhapsthegreatestimportancewillbeattachedtotheMagnifyingTransmitterasamaeforattaddefense,moreparticularlyinewithTelautomatics.Thisiionisalogicalouteofobservationsbeguninmyboyhoodandtihroughoutmylife.WhenthefirstresultswerepublishedtheElectricalReviewstatededitoriallythatitwouldbeeohe"mostpotentfactorsintheadvandcivilizationofmankind".Thetimeisnotdistahisprediwillbefulfilled.In1898and1900itwasofferedtotheGoverandmighthavebeenadoptedwereIohosewhowouldgotoAlexander'sshepherdwhentheywantafavorfromAlexathattimeIreallythoughtthatitwouldabolishwar,becauseofitsunlimiteddestructivenessandexclusionofthepersonalelementofbat.ButwhileIhavenotlostfaithinitspotentialities,myviewshavegedsince.

  Warotbeavoideduntilthephysicalcauseforitsrecurrenceisremovedandthis,ianalysis,isthevastextentoftheplaonwhichwelive.Onlythruannihilationofdistaneveryrespect,astheveyanceofintelligeransportofpassengersandsuppliesandtransmissionofenergywillditionsbebroughtaboutsomeday,insuringpermanencyoffriendlyrelations.wantmostisclosertadbetteruandiweenindividualsandunitiesallovertheearth,andtheeliminationofthatfanaticdevotioedidealsofnationalegoismandpridewhichisalroopluheworldintoprimevalbarbarismandstrife.Noleagueorparliamentaryactofanykindwilleverpreventsuchacalamity.Theseareonlynewdevicesforputtingtheweakatthemercyofthestrong.

  Ihaveexpressedmyselfinthisregardfourteenyearsago,whenabinationofafewleadinggovers-asortofHolyAlliance-wasadvocatedbythelateAndrewegie,whomaybefairlysideredasthefatherofthisidea,havinggiventoitmorepublicityandimpetusthananybodyelsepriortotheeffortsofthePresident.Whileitotbedehatsuchapactmightbeofmaterialadvaosomelessfortunatepeoples,itotattainthechiefobjectsought.Peaonlyeasanaturalsequenceofuniversalenlighteandmergingofraces,andwearestillfarfromthisblissfulrealization.

  AsIviewtheworldoftoday,inthelightofthegiganticstrugglewehavewitnessed,IamfilledwithvithattheisofhumanitywouldbebestservediftheUatesremairuetoitstraditionsaoutof"entanglingalliances".Situatedasitis,geographically,remotefromthetheatersofimpendingflicts,withoutiivetoterritorialaggra,withinexhaustibleresourdimmensepopulationthorolyimbuedwiththespiritoflibertyandright,thistryisplaauniqueandprivilegedposition.Itisthusabletoexert,indepely,itscolossalstrengthandmoralforcetothebeofall,morejudiciouslyandeffectively,thanasmemberofaleague.

  Ihavedweltonthecircumstanyearlylifeandtoldofanaffliwhipelledmetouingexeraginationandselfobservation.Thismentalactivity,atfirstinvoluntaryuhepressureofillnessandsuffering,graduallybecameseatureandledmefinallytIwasbutanautomatondevoidoffreewillinthoughtandaandmerelyrespoheforcesoftheenviro.Ourbodiesareofsuplexityofstructure,themotionsweperformaresonumerousandinvolved,aernalimpressionsonoursenseanstosuchadegreedelicateandelusivethatitishardfortheaveragepersontograspthisfadyetnothingismorevingtothetrainediigatorthanthemeistictheoryoflifewhichhadbeen,inameasure,uoodandpropoundedbyDescartesthreehundredyearsago.Butinhistimemanyimportantfunsanismwereunknownand,especiallywithrespecttothenatureoflightandthestruaionoftheeye,philosopherswereinthedark.

  Iyearstheprogressofstificresearthesefieldshasbeensuchastoleavenoroomforadoubtinregardtothisviewonwhiyworkshavebeenpublished.Osablestandmosteloquentexposis,perhaps,FelixLeDanteerlyassistantofPasteur.?Prof.JacquesLoebhasperformedremarkableexperimentsiropism,clearlyestablishirollingpoweroflightinlowerformsanisms,andhislatestbook,Forents,isrevelatory.Butwhilemenofsceacceptthistheorysimplyasanyotherthatisreized,tomeitisatruthwhichIhourlydemonstratebyeveryadthoughtofmihesciousnessoftheexternalimpressionpromptioanykiion,physiental,iseverpresentinmymind.Onlyonveryrareoccasions,whenIwasinastateofexceptionaltration,haveIfounddifficultyinlogtheinalimpulses.

  Thebyfargreaternumberofhumanbeingsareneverawareofassingaroundandwithinthem,andmillionsfallvictimsofdiseaseanddieprematurelyjustonthisat.Theoevery-dayoccurrencesappeartothemmysteriousandinexplicable.Onemayfeelasuddenwaveofsadnessandrakehisbrainforanexplanationwhenhemighthavenoticedthatitwascausedbyacloudcuttingofftheraysofthesun.Hemayseetheimageofafrieohimunderditionswhichhestruesasverypeculiar,whenonlyshortlybeforehehaspassedhimireetorseenhisphotographsomewhere.Whenhelosesacollarbuttonhefussesandswearsforanhour,beinguovisualizehispreviousasandlocatetheobjectdirectly.Defitobservationismerelyaformofignorandresponsibleforthemanymorbidnotionsandfoolishideasprevailing.Thereisnotmorethaofeverytenpersonswhodoesnotbelieveihyandotherpsychiifestations,spiritualismandunionwiththedead,andwhowouldrefusetolistentowillingorunwillingdeceivers.

  JusttoillustratehowdeeplyrootedthistendencyhasbeeevenamongtheclearheadedAmeripopulation,Imaymentionait.Shortlybeforethewar,whentheexhibitionofmyturbihiscityelicitedwidespreadentieicalpapers,Ianticipatedthattherewouldbeascrambleamongmanufacturerstogetholdoftheiion,andIhadparticulardesignsonthatmanfromDetroitwhohasanunyfacultyforaccumulatingmillions.SofidentwasIthathewouldturnupsomeday,thatIdeclaredthisascertaintomysecretaryandassistants.Sureenough,onefinemabodyofengineersfromtheFordMotorpaedthemselveswiththerequestofdiscussingwithmeanimportantproject."Didn'tItellyou?"Iremarkedtriumphantlytomyemployees,ahemsaid,"Youareamazing,Mr.Tesla;everythingesoutexactlyasyoupredict."Assoonasthesehard-headedmeedI,ofcourse,immediatelybegaolthewonderfulfeaturesofmyturbine,whenthespokesmeninterruptedmeandsaid,"Weknowallaboutthis,butweareonaspecialerrand.Wehaveformedapsychologicalsocietyfortheiigationofpsychiomenaayoutojoinusinthisuaking."Isupposethoseengineersneverknewhowheycametobeingfiredoutofmyoffice.

  EversinceIwastoldbysomeofthegreatestmenofthetime,leadersinscewhosenamesareimmortal,thatIampossessedofanunusualmind,IbentallmythinkingfacultiesonthesolutionofgreatproblemsregardlessofsacrifianyyearsIendeavoredtosolvetheenigmaofdeath,andwatchedeagerlyforeverykindofspiritualindication.ButonlyohecourseofmyexistencehaveIhadanexperiencewhientarilyimpressedmeassupernatural.Itwasatthetimeofmymother'sdeath.

  Ihadbeepletelyexhaustedbypainandlongvigilandonenightwascarriedtoabuildingabouttwoblocksfromourhome.?AsIlayhelplessthere,IthoughtthatifmymotherdiedwhileIwasawayfromherbedsideshewouldsurelygivemeasign.TwoorthreemonthsbeforeIwasinLondoninpanywithmylatefriend,SirWilliamCrookes,whenspiritualismwasdiscussed,andIwasuhefullswayofthesethoughts.Imightnothavepaidattentiontoothermen,butwassusceptibletohisargumentsasitwashisepochalworkonradiantmatter,whichIhadreadasastudent,thatmademeembracetheelectricalcareer.Ireflectedthattheditionsforalookintothebeyondweremostfavorable,formymotherwasawomanofgeniusandparticularlyexcellinginthepowersofintuition.Duringthewholenighteveryfiberinmybrainwasstrainediancy,butnothinghappeilearlyinthem,whenIfellinasleep,orperhapsaswoon,andsawacloudcarryingangelicfiguresofmarvelousbeauty,oneofwhomgazeduponmelovinglyandgraduallyassumedthefeaturesofmymother.Theappearanceslowlyfloatedacrosstheroomandvanished,andIwasawakenedbyanindescribablysweetsongofmanyvoices.Inthatinstaude,whiowordsexpress,cameupomymotherhadjustdied.Andthatwastrue.IwasuouaremendousweightofthepainfulknowledgeIreceivedinadvandwrotealettertoSirWilliamCrookeswhilestilluhedominationoftheseimpressionsandinpoorbodilyhealth.

  WhenIrecoveredIsoughtforalongtimetheexternalcauseofthisstrangemaionand,tomygreatrelief,Isucceededaftermanymonthsoffruitlesseffort.Ihadseenthepaintingofacelebratedartist,representingallegoricallyoheseasonsintheformofacloudwithagroupofangelswhichseemedtoactuallyfloatintheair,andthishadstruckmeforcefully.Itwasexactlythesamethatappearedinmydream,withtheexceptionofmymother'slikehemusiccamefromthechoirinthechurearbyattheearlymassofEasterm,explainihingsatisfactorilyinitywithstificfacts.
