  OnthemofAugust4,1944,sometimebetweentenahirty,acarpulledupat263Prinsengracht.Severalfiguresemerged:anSSsergeant,KarlJosefSilberbauer,infulluniform,andatleastthreeDutchmembersoftheSecurityPolice,armedbutincivilianclothes.Someohavetippedthemoff.

  TheyarrestedtheeightpeoplehidingintheAnnex,aswellastwooftheirhelpers,VictlerandJohannesKleiman--thoughnotMiepGiesandElisabeth(Bep)

  Voskuijl-andtookallthevaluablesandcashtheycouldfindintheAnnex.

  Afterthearrest,KuglerandKleimaakentoaprisoninAmsterdam.Oember11,1944,theyweretransferred,withoutbeofatrial,toacampinAmersfoort(Holland).Kleiman,becauseofhispoorhealth,wasreleasedoember18,1944.HeremainedinAmsterdamuntilhisdeathin1959.

  KuglermaoescapehisimprisoonMarch28,1945,whenheandhisfellowprisonerswerebeioGermanyasforcedlaborers.Heimmigratedtoadain1955aorontoin1989.

  Elisabeth(Bep)VoskuijlWijkdiedinAmsterdamin1983.

  MiepSantrouschitzGiesisstilllivinginAmsterdam;herhusbandJandiedin1993.

  Upontheirarrest,theeightresidentsoftheAnnexwerefirstbroughttoaprisoninAmsterdamaransferredtoWesterbork,thetransitcampforJewsihofHolland.Theyweredeportedoember3,1944,itransporttoleaveWesterbork,andarrivedthreedayslaterinAuschwitz(Poland).

  HermannvanPels(vanDaan)was,acctothetestimonyofOttoFrank,gassedtodeathinAuschwitzinOctoberorNovember1944,shortlybeforethegaschambersweredismantled.

  AugustevanPels(PetronellavanDaan)wastransportedfromAuschwitzten-Belsen,fromtheretoBuwald,thentoTheresienstadtonApril9,1945,andapparentlytoanothertrationcampafterthat.Itiscertainthatshedidnotsurvive,thoughthedateofherdeathisunknown.

  PetervanPels(vanDaan)wasforcedtotakepartintheJanuary16,1945"deathmarch"fromAuschwitztoMauthausen(Austria),wherehediedonMay5,1945,threedaysbeforethecampwasliberated.

  FritzPfeffer(AlbertDussel)diedonDecember20,1944,intheNeuengammetrationcamp,wherehehadbeentransferredfromeitherBuwaldorSahausen.

  EdithFrankdiedinAuschwitz-BirkenauonJanuary6,1945,fromhungerandexhaustion.

  MargotandAnneFraransportedfromAuschwitzattheendofOctoberand

  broughttenBelsen,atrationearHannermany).Thetyphusepidemicthatbrokeoutierof1944-1945,asaresultofthehorrendoushygeniditions,killedthousandsofprisoners,includingMargotand,afewdayslater,Anne.ShemusthavediedinlateFebruaryorearlyMarch.ThebodiesofbothgirlswereprobablydumpedinBergen-Belsensmassgraves.ThecampwasliberatedbyBritishtroopsonApril12,1945.
