Thedisplayofsuperiorknowledgeorrichesmaybemadesuffitlymortifying;buttheseadmitofapalliative.Theknowledgewhichisbroughtouttoinsultme,mayactallyimproveme;andintherishousesandpictures,--hisparksandgardens,Ihaveatemporaryusufructatleast.Butthedisplayofmarriedhappinesshashesepalliatives:itisthroughoutpure,unrepensed,unqualifiedinsult.
Marriagebyitsbesttitleisamonopoly,andnotoftheleastinvidioussort.Itistheingofmostpossessorsofanyexclusiveprivilegetokeeptheiradvantageasmuchoutofsightaspossible,thattheirlessfavouredneighbours,seeinglittleofthebe,maythelessbedisposedtoquestiontheright.Butthesemarriedmonopoliststhrustthemostobnoxiouspartoftheirpatentintoourfaces.
